When Does Ovulation Occur?

The fertile period of any woman represents the interval of time within a month when she has the highest chances to remain pregnant.

When Does Ovulation Occur?

Ovulation is the detachment of an egg from the ovary and takes place in most cases in the 14th day of menstruation. However, the exact period can be different from one woman to another and from one month to another. Having knowledge about when is the period of your ovulation is extremely useful when planning a pregnancy within a family.

The monthly fertile period is when a woman can remain pregnant if she has unprotected sex. The most suggestive way of understanding how this works is the below chart because it explains very well which is the monthly fertile period calculated based on a cycle of 28 days.

How Do I Know when I’m Ovulating?

The signs and symptoms of the ovulation are pretty subtle and still, if you understand when you are ovulating – and to make sex around that period, especially 1 or 2 days before ovulation – can improve your chances to become pregnant. There are a few ways to do so:

Measurement of How Long Is your Period

One of the misconceptions about fertility is that the woman when it ovulating is the most fertile, in the 14th day of her menstrual cycle. This is true only for women who have a regular cycle (of 28 days), and this happens at just 10% from them.

Actually, there aren`t 14 days since the menstruation began, but 14 days before the next menstruation. Therefore, if the menstrual cycle is perfectly regular, you can approximate the day when the ovulation will come subtracting 14 days from the day when you are expecting your next menstruation. For instance, a woman with a menstrual cycle of 30 days probably eliminates the egg in the 16th day, and a woman with a cycle of 26 days, in the 12th day.

At most women, the menstrual cycle has lasts between 28 to 32 days. The ovulation can be calculated starting with the first days of the last menstruation or subtracting 12 – 16 days from the date of the next menstruation. Most women ovulate at some moment between the 11th and 21st day of their cycle when you count from the first day of the last menstrual cycle. This is what is known as “fertile period,” because during this period you have the highest chance of becoming pregnant. The ovulation can appear in different moments of the menstrual cycles and in different days from one month to another. – Click this web page!

Daily Measurement of Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

Measuring the body`s temperature every morning before getting out of bed is a method of confirming your ovulation. After the egg is released, due to the secretion of progesterone, the body`s temperature increases with 0.5 C and remains slightly increased until right before the next menstruation. Still, this method isn`t useful to schedule a sexual contact because when the body`s temperature has started to decreased, the ovulation has already occurred, which means that there`s very little time to conceive, up to 24 hours to be more exact.

Using an Ovulation Predictor

If the menstrual cycle is irregular, then it may be useful an ovulation predictor. This method aims to identify, for example in urine, an increase of the luteinizing hormone (LH) which appears 16 to 32 hours before ovulating. The possibility for error of this test is relatively short and limits its practical usefulness.

The Examination of Cervical Fluid

You can examine cervical fluid (either from a napkin or from your underwear) to find out at what moment of your cycle are. A few days after menstruation, cervical fluid can be dry, thick and sticky, and then it becomes watery. When this fluid becomes clear, glossy and elastic (can be stretched), similar to egg white, it means that you are in your fertile period. – Check this page!

Listen to your Body

There are a few physical signs associated with ovulation, although rather subtle, and they can be noticed sometimes by some women.

Around 20% from women feel a pain similar to an acute cramp, rarely severe, located on one side of the lower abdomen. Mittelschmerz – “pain in mid-cycle” in German – is produced in the moment of ovulation due to an irritation of the peritoneum (the membrane of the pelvis and abdomen) by the liquid or blood eliminated along with the egg from the ovary.

How Long Does Ovulation Last?

There aren`t much to say about how long does ovulation last because the elimination of the egg from the follicle always happens within 24 hours. The released egg is seized by one of the fallopian tubes. Here, in case of unprotected sex, the egg can be fertilized by a sperm. The result of fertilization is an egg which a few days later will become an embryo. The ovulation is cyclical if there isn`t a pregnancy involved – in most cases it takes place at 28 days.

Can You Get Pregnant on Ovulation Day?

A pregnancy appears after the fertilization of an egg by a sperm, but only in the days around the ovulation: 3-4 days before and 1-2 days after. Statistics show that at a regular menstrual cycle of 28 days, the ovulation appears in the 14th day, being considered the first day of the cycle. At a regular cycle of 29 days, the ovulation takes place in the 15th day, at the one of 30 days appears in the 16th day, and so on. The period of 14 days from ovulation is the constant one until the next menstrual cycle.

An egg lives between 12 and 24 hours. Then, if it isn`t fertilized, it dies and gets removed. The life of sperm is of around 3 to 5 days. The egg`s fertilization depends on their viability and motility. Sperm carrying chromosomes X (the ones that will give birth to girls) are larger in volume, move slower, but they live longer, between 3 and 5 days. The ones carrying chromosomes Y (the ones that will make boys) are smaller, faster, but they only live for 24 to 48 hours. That`s why, if the sexual contact takes place close to the ovulation date, or after, there are bigger chances for the baby to be a boy. Otherwise, the sperm carrying chromosomes Y will die, and the ones carrying chromosomes X will “wait” the egg and will fertilized.

When Does Ovulation Bleeding Occur?

Opinions are divided when it comes to bleeding during menstruation. Some experts believe that the follicle`s rupture and release of the egg are to blame for their appearance. When you are ovulating, luteinizing hormone makes the surface of the follicle thinner and can even brake. This way, the egg is released and leaves towards one of the fallopian tubes. This stage when the egg is released might sometimes be accompanied by a small bleeding.

On the other hand, there are voices which say that the female hormones, estrogen to be more exact, can cause this bleeding. The level of estrogen increases fast exactly before the egg leaves the ovary, and before the rupture of the follicle decreases suddenly, the same way it happens before menstruation. According to this theory, this is the cause of the bleeding.

When Does Implantation Occur?

The implantation of the embryo occurs at around 6 to 12 days after the fertilization of the egg – from the moment of the unprotected sex contact when the conception took place.

When Does Implantation Bleeding Occur?

The exact moment when the implantation bleeding occurs always depends on the menstrual cycle of the woman and the time of the implantation of the egg. This bleeding might appear during implantation and may last for a few days. If and when this implantation bleeding appears and if it is a heavy bleeding or not as much as to become visible will very much depend from woman to woman. This is why implantation bleeding isn`t really a suitable pregnancy sign. In this case, a pregnancy test is more reliable.

Ovulation Bleeding and Getting Pregnant

Ovulation bleedings usually last around 1 or 2 days and after then the ovulation appears. If you`ve done your homework and monitor this stage of your menstrual cycle for a few months, you`ll know which is the best moment to remain pregnant.

In addition, follow the changes that appear in the cervical mucus because usually after the release of the egg, it will change its consistency – it isn`t gelatinous and sticky anymore. Planning the sexual intercourse near the ovulation period will increase your chances to remain pregnant.

With the help of this calculator, you can find out which are the monthly days when you are ovulating and you can this way increase your chance to remain pregnant.

How Can a Woman Know if She`ll Remain Pregnant?

Most women don`t even remain pregnant at their first attempt, especially if their general health isn`t very good (overweight, diabetes, etc). If you want to have more chances to remain pregnant, it`s recommended to avoid smoking, alcohol, drugs or drinking too much coffee. More than this, it takes patience when planning to remain pregnant because it could take several months until it could happen.

Doctors won`t take into consideration the possibility for a couple to be infertile unless there were sexual contacts in the ovulation period for more than 6 months without getting pregnant. In this case, the doctor will recommend special tests for both partners to establish the causes of infertility.
